Judge Thomas Bailey [Alexander Knox] is tired of his probate duties in Boston, drifting through life and a marriage that has grown tense with his wife, Evelyn Bailey [Frieda Inescort]. In a routine custody case, he denies a mother’s plea in favor of the child’s more conservative grandfather, exposing a man who clings to stability over risk. At home, Evelyn resents his lack of ambition and pushes for a grander path, hoping to pull him into a Washington lobbyist position for a powerful company. Tom agrees to travel to Washington to see what the opportunity might offer, hoping this could bring some purpose back into his days.
On the train toward Washington, Bailey develops what appears to be an ulcer and, following medical advice, detours to a small town for a restorative break. He spends time fishing and, feeling guilty for stepping away from his responsibilities, fails to dispatch a timely telegram home. After weeks on the road, he ends up in California, where he takes a job as a short-order cook at a roadside cafe run by Peggy Ann Sothern. There, he discovers real happiness and a new sense of belonging, a life far removed from the rigidity of his Boston routine. Peggy is also trying to adopt a girl named Nan Sharyn Moffett, and Tom’s presence slowly reveals the possibility of a different future for them both.
Tom becomes drawn into Peggy’s adoption quest, aiding with the necessary papers, but Peggy faces a rejection from the courts. He comes to see that the system harbors prejudice against Peggy, partly because she is an unmarried mother with a man living in her café. More importantly, he realizes that he himself was biased when he first ruled in favor of the wealthy grandfather, simply because he had money and prestige. This awakening prompts a dramatic turn as he returns to Boston to challenge the miscarriage of justice and to advocate for Peggy and Nan.
Back in the courtroom, Tom fights to rectify the wrongs of the earlier decision, and his steadfast commitment begins to reshape his own sense of duty. While the appellate process unfolds, he is offered a seat on the bench, a prestigious position that would anchor him in Boston—but he declines, choosing instead to pursue what he believes is right, and to return to Peggy and Nan in California. Evelyn, in the meantime, has undergone a change of heart; no longer self-centered, she has grown more empathetic toward Tom and the life he envisions.
Despite Evelyn’s newfound understanding, Tom realizes that his true calling lies with the law and the work he has begun. He heads toward the California station with that conflict in mind, only to be surprised when Peggy appears at the platform. In a quiet, meaningful exchange, they acknowledge how each has found happiness—Peggy with Nan in California, and Tom steadied by his work and his roots in Boston. Tom offers Peggy his train ticket so she can return to California, and they part with genuine affection. He watches Peggy’s train depart, then returns home, a man who has chosen a path that reconciles his sense of duty with the possibility of personal happiness.
