During the Cold War, America deployed its most celebrated jazz musicians as cultural ambassadors, sending icons like Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington on international tours. This remarkable story explores the complex intersection of the Cold War, the Civil Rights movement, and the challenges faced by these groundbreaking artists. As they traveled the world representing the United States, Armstrong, Gillespie, Ellington, and their mixed-race bands confronted the painful reality of Jim Crow segregation within their own country, forcing them to reconcile their roles as ambassadors with the racial injustices at home.
