On the day of his wedding, Fadinard’s horse swallows a lady’s hat while she hides behind a roadside bush with her lover, Lieutenant Tavernier. Because the married woman cannot appear hat‑less, Tavernier orders Fadinard to procure an identical hat or risk ruining the ceremony. The groom races through a cascade of absurd obstacles, trying to replace the hat while keeping his wedding on schedule.
