What Happens in The Intelligence Men: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The Intelligence Men (1965) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In a busy London coffee bar, Eric Morecambe as Eric serves black coffee to a sinister-looking man who presses him to remember a tune, a request that proves futile for his famously tone-deaf ear. The moment is interrupted when Ernie Wise as Ernie Sage enters, and Eric tries to recruit him to identify the elusive melody, though the effort yields little at first.

The scene widens as Sage suspects the tune might be connected to an imminent visit by a Russian trade delegation and an assassination plot orchestrated by a shadowy group called SCHLECHT, a wry parody of SPECTRE. He reports the odd encounter to Military Intelligence, where he is treated as little more than an office-boy, yet his intuition nudges the agency toward taking the threat seriously.

Reluctantly, they decide that only Eric, the man who heard the tune, can lead them to the heart of the conspiracy. Eric is persuaded to pose as a British agent—the recently deceased Major Cavendish—who had managed to infiltrate SCHLECHT, setting the stage for a high-stakes blend of espionage and farce.

After a string of comic set-pieces, the tune is finally identified and the action pivots to a Swan Lake performance at the planned venue, where the star Russian ballerina Madame Petrovna, played by April Olrich, finds herself in grave danger. Some of the film’s best moments come from Eric, masquerading as a Russian, adopting a broad Scottish highland accent, while [Ernie Wise] remains at his side in a humorous double-act, both of them wearing Egyptian costumes during the ballet and tangling with the playful chaos of the Dance of the Little Swans.

As the ballet unfolds, the deception unravels, the villain is unmasked, and the story resolves with a lighthearted sense of closure—Eric and Ernie’s caper ending in triumph and everyone walking away with a smile.

The Intelligence Men Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about The Intelligence Men (1965): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why was Eric chosen for the espionage mission in The Intelligence Men?

Eric was chosen because he was the only person who heard the mysterious tune from the sinister man in the coffee bar. Military Intelligence realized that only Eric, with his partial recollection of the melody, could lead them to the heart of the SCHLECHT conspiracy. Despite being treated as an office-boy, his unique connection to the mysterious tune made him essential to the operation.

Foreshadowing: Earlier in the coffee bar, the sinister man's insistence that Eric remember the tune hints at his importance to the larger plot.

Q2

What is SCHLECHT in The Intelligence Men?

SCHLECHT is a shadowy espionage organization parodying SPECTRE from the James Bond series. The film presents them as a feared group planning an assassination against a Russian ballerina during a Covent Garden performance. They operate in swinging London and have infiltrated British intelligence through their deceased agent Major Cavendish.

Foreshadowing: The reference to SCHLECHT as a feared group early in the film establishes them as a serious threat, though the comedic tone undercuts any real danger.

  • bond parody
Q3

How does the tune connect to the assassination plot?

The tune serves as a signal or identifier for the SCHLECHT assassins. When the sinister man asks Eric to remember it in the coffee bar, he's testing whether Eric can identify the melody that will trigger or confirm the assassination operation. Once the tune is finally identified, it reveals the timing and location of the planned attack during the Swan Lake performance.

Foreshadowing: Ernie Sage's realization that the tune could relate to an assassination plot reframes the innocent-seeming coffee bar encounter as a critical moment in the conspiracy.

Q4

Why does Eric impersonate Major Cavendish?

Eric impersonates Major Cavendish because the real Major Cavendish was a British agent who had successfully infiltrated SCHLECHT but was now dead. By assuming Cavendish's identity, Eric could approach SCHLECHT from within their organization, gaining access to their inner circle and uncovering the assassination plot from the inside.

Foreshadowing: Military Intelligence explains that Cavendish had managed to infiltrate SCHLECHT, making his identity a valuable cover for getting close to the conspirators.

Q5

Why does Eric use a Scottish accent while posing as Russian?

Eric adopts a broad Scottish highland accent while masquerading as Russian as part of the film's comedic farce. The absurd combination of trying to appear Russian while speaking with a strong Scottish accent creates a humorous visual of the film's spoof nature. It's a deliberate comedic choice that highlights the absurdity of the espionage disguise.

Foreshadowing: This moment showcases the film's commitment to parody over plausibility, reflecting its overall whimsical tone.

Q6

Why do Eric and Ernie wear Egyptian costumes during the ballet?

Eric and Ernie wear Egyptian costumes as part of their cover to infiltrate the Swan Lake performance at Covent Garden. The disguise allows them to move freely around the theater while maintaining their false identities. The absurdity of Egyptian costumes at a Russian ballet performance adds to the film's farcical nature, with the characters becoming entangled in the Dance of the Little Swans while dressed in Egyptian attire.

Foreshadowing: The costumes represent another layer of the disguise plan developed during the infiltration phase.

Q7

How is the villain unmasked in The Intelligence Men?

As the ballet performance unfolds and the assassination attempt begins, the disguise unravels and the true identity of the SCHLECHT villain behind the plot is revealed. Eric and Ernie's presence at the performance, combined with their investigation, allows them to identify and expose the conspirator before the assassination can be carried out.

Foreshadowing: The shift to the Swan Lake venue in the timeline marks the point where all the buildup converges and the deception must unravel.

Q8

Why is a Russian ballerina targeted for assassination?

The Russian ballerina Madame Petrovna is targeted because she is performing as part of a cultural exchange during a Russian trade delegation's visit to London. Her prominent performance at Covent Garden makes her a high-profile target that would create significant diplomatic incident, which is precisely what SCHLECHT intends to provoke.

Foreshadowing: Sage's early realization connects the tune to the imminent Russian trade delegation visit, establishing the diplomatic stakes.

Q9

What happens to Eric and Ernie at the end of The Intelligence Men?

Eric and Ernie successfully thwart the assassination plot and unmask the villain. The film ends with a lighthearted happy ending where they celebrate their unlikely victory. Everyone walks away with a smile, reflecting the film's comedic tone and guaranteed positive resolution.

Foreshadowing: The narrative's consistently lighthearted atmosphere and comedic tone ensure from the start that the outcome will be positive.

How is the tune finally identified in the film?

After a series of comic set-pieces and misadventures attempting to decode the mysterious tune, Eric and the Military Intelligence team eventually succeed in identifying the melody. The identification shifts the entire plan, revealing that the assassination is set to occur during the Swan Lake performance at Covent Garden, allowing them to intercept the plot.
