How The House of Flowers: The Movie (2021) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.
The ending of The House of Flowers: The Movie reveals the truth about the past and the tragic events surrounding Pato’s death. The siblings, Paulina, Elena, and Julian, undertake a daring heist to find evidence believed to be hidden in their childhood home. When they finally open the treasure box, they find old paintings and a VHS tape. However, the tape turns out to be overwritten, containing only memories of the family rather than the confession against Agustin Corcuera. This suggests that Virginia might have deliberately erased any proof of Agustin’s involvement in Pato’s death, possibly to protect her family or out of guilt.
The film slowly uncovers that Agustin was indeed involved in Pato’s death. At a wedding in 1980, Agustin confesses to Virginia that he loved Pato but was too scared to accept his feelings. During a fight where Pato was insulted and assaulted for his sexuality, Agustin intervened in a moment of cowardice and unintentionally killed him. This revelation is heartbreaking because it confirms that Agustin’s remorse is genuine, but it also highlights the tragic consequences of fear and repression.
In the final moments, Delia encourages the siblings to move forward and forgive the past, symbolized by her own peaceful departure into a heavenly light, suggesting that she has found peace. The film closes with the family beginning to heal, acknowledging the pain but choosing to let go of long-held grudges. The ending emphasizes that sometimes, confronting harsh truths allows the family to finally find closure and peace.
