The Hand That Rocks the Cradle

In the climax Caitlyn finally confronts the nanny who has been systematically tearing her family apart. Polly’s violent act of murdering Stewart – the friend who unearthed her tragic past – drives Caitlyn over the edge, and a frantic struggle erupts between the two women. A speeding neighbor’s car crashes into Caitlyn’s vehicle, hurling Polly onto the pavement where she bleeds out. In her final moments Caitlyn cradles Polly’s head, a quiet acknowledgement that their pain was intertwined.

Months later the scene shifts to a quiet evening by the fireplace. Caitlyn, now nursing the scar on her hand from the fight, asks Miguel where Emma is. He tells her Emma is with Josie, and the children are safe. Emma appears, silently reciting the story Polly once told her about surviving on canned tuna, a detail that signals Polly’s world‑view has seeped into the girls. Though Polly is dead, the film suggests that her attitudes toward class, survival, and identity have been passed down to Emma and may shape Josie as they grow. The ending leaves Caitlyn confronting the consequences of her past actions while the next generation carries forward the fragile legacy of the woman who came to their home seeking vengeance.
