In spring 1945, as World War II draws to a close, disciplined Englishman Roger Halyard lives on a remote South Sea atoll with his three sheltered daughters—Gloria, Hester and Violet—and their longtime housekeeper Thelma. The girls have never met another man, and Halyard anxiously learns that 1,500 U.S. Marines will soon land to build an air base, threatening to upend their isolated world.
