In a vibrant Paris nightclub, renowned American dancer Guy Holden enjoys a night out with his friend Egbert Fitzgerald, an English lawyer. Their night takes an unexpected turn when they realize they've forgotten their wallets, leading to a desperate attempt to avoid washing dishes.

Guy and Egbert set sail for England, embarking on a journey filled with whimsy. During the voyage, Guy encounters Mimi Glossop when her dress gets caught, resulting in an accidental mishap that sees her skirt torn.

In an effort to help Mimi after the skirt tearing incident, Guy offers her his coat, trying to make amends. Despite his friendly gesture, Mimi insists she’ll return it through the mail, setting up the opportunity for future encounters.

Mimi successfully returns the coat, doing so while ensuring the courier does not disclose her location. This mysterious return leads Guy on an unsuccessful two-week search for her in London.

After weeks of searching, fate steps in when Guy collides with Mimi's car. This encounter ignites a playful chase that ultimately leads to an impromptu picnic proposal, though Mimi is taken aback and declines his spontaneous marriage offer.

Unbeknownst to Guy, Mimi is in the midst of seeking a divorce from her long-absent husband, Cyril Glossop. With her meddling Aunt Hortense's guidance, she turns to Egbert for legal help, leading to a scheme involving a staged affair.

At a seaside hotel, Guy and Egbert's plan unfolds, allowing Guy and Mimi to reunite. During their time together, they share an intimate dance to 'Night and Day,' which strengthens their connection but also rekindles misunderstandings.

When Mimi invites Guy to her room at midnight, he is caught off guard by her boldness. However, the arrival of Rodolfo Tonetti complicates matters, as he misinterprets the situation, leading to tension among the trio.

As Tonetti becomes otherwise engaged, Guy and Mimi seize the opportunity to escape their confines. They indulge in a breathtaking dance known as 'The Continental,' showcasing Mimi's vocals and their undeniable chemistry.

As the sun rises, complications arise when Cyril arrives unexpectedly and Guy must quickly hide to maintain their ruse. Amid humorous miscommunications with the waiter, tensions mount with Cyril, who remains indifferent to the truth.

In a bid to protect their facade, Guy emerges to confront Cyril, attempting to convince him of the supposed affair with Mimi. Cyril's wealth and arrogance make it difficult for Guy to sway him, resulting in a standoff.

In a twist of fate, the oblivious waiter accidentally reveals Cyril’s own infidelity during the confrontation. This unexpected turn of events brings Mimi closer to finalizing her divorce and paving the way for a new chapter with Guy.
