The Corruption of Chris Miller

Ruth discovers Barney sleeping in her barn and initially orders him to leave. However, she Softens to him because she's isolated in the remote mountain village with her husband away, and she eventually hires him as a handyman. Her pragmatic nature and loneliness make her vulnerable to his charm.

Earlier, Ruth's husband is away, leaving her alone in the isolated mansion with only Chris for company.

Chris suffers from PTSD following a violent rape that left her institutionalized. Heavy rain and the sound of running water during storms trigger vivid flashbacks to the assault, sending her into a dissociative, violent state. The trauma is compounded by her father's abandonment during the attack.

Chris was recently discharged from a psychiatric institution after recovering from a nervous breakdown.

Barney is a charismatic drifter who seduces both women in the house. With Chris, he exploits her vulnerability and fragmented memories of her trauma. With Ruth, he uses charm to gain employment and trust. His motive becomes clearer later: he was sent by Chris's father to surveil the women and steal family heirlooms.

Barney witnesses Chris's flashback in the basement, which Ruth blames him for triggering.

The killer is a man dressed in a black rain shawl who arrives at a nearby farm, steals a sickle from the barn, and murders an entire family including children. The young son mistakes him for a monk and unlocks the door. This killer is never fully identified in the film, his capture is reported only as news that clears Barney's name.

The killer's arrival at the farm is shown as a separate plot line, establishing him as a real threat distinct from Barney.

When Barney breaks into the house that night, Chris investigates and a flashback to her rape erupts. In a dissociative panic, she stabs him in the back with a knife from her nighttable. Ruth, believing Barney is the farm killer, joins in and stabs him multiple times until he dies.

Earlier, storms triggered Chris's violent flashbacks, and Barney had witnessed one of these episodes in the basement.

After seeing news footage of the farm murders, Ruth and Chris immediately suspect Barney because he was a drifter who had been staying with them and was ejected from the house. Their fear and the timing of his return that night lead them to conclude he's the killer, especially since they don't know the real killer has been apprehended.

Ruth had ordered Barney to leave at gunpoint after blaming him for triggering Chris's flashback, making him an easy suspect.

After killing Barney, Ruth and Chris discover through his belongings that he was recently released from prison and was an acquaintance of Chris's father. Ruth deduces that Chris's father sent Barney to surveil the women and steal a cache of family pearls and heirlooms. Barney was not a random drifter but someone sent by Chris's absent father.

Chris's father abandoned her during the rape incident, and the film establishes he is absent from her life.

After realizing they've killed an innocent man, Ruth and Chris must dispose of the body to avoid arrest. They bury Barney at a remote construction site where a road is being built, then watch from a distance as workers pave over the area, effectively hiding their crime.

Ruth and Chris had carefully reconstructed their story as self-defense before discovering the truth about Barney.

The next morning, construction workers discover a sinkhole at the burial site and begin digging, exposing the area where Barney is buried. This visually suggests their crime is at risk of being uncovered, leaving their future uncertain and maintaining the film's ambiguous, ominous tone.
