During the war in Afghanistan, U.S. Army Sergeant Cody Cullen clings to a Christmas card that arrived from Faith Spelman Faith Spelman back in Nevada City, California. The card, carried from home and handed by a fellow soldier, becomes a quiet thread of memory for him as months pass. When the soldier who gave him the card is killed, [Cody Cullen] finds his loneliness deepened—he has no family of his own, and his father died in Vietnam. This fragile link to a life he barely knows keeps him tethered to a sense of home he can’t quite reach.
A few weeks before Christmas, [Cody Cullen] travels to Nevada City to see Faith, the fiancée of that fallen soldier. A chance encounter at a luncheonette—where Faith and Cody happen to place identical orders—adds a spark he tries to deny. On his way out of town, he saves Faith’s father, Luke Spelman, from a speeding car. Luke takes a liking to Cody and invites him to stay on as temporary help at the family logging business, drawing him further into a community he hadn’t realized he was missing. Meanwhile, Faith’s longtime boyfriend, Paul, who travels a lot for work, arrives with his own agenda, hoping Faith will move away from the close-knit roots she cherishes.
Despite Faith’s best efforts to stay emotionally cautious, she and Cody grow closer and share a kiss that deepens both of their inner conflicts. When Paul asks Faith to marry him, she says yes, but her commitment wavers as she wrestles with where her heart truly belongs. Paul’s practical concerns—stability and distance—collide with Faith’s desire to remain near family and the world she loves in Nevada City. The tension between duty, desire, and devotion comes to a head on Christmas Eve. On the church steps, Cody confesses his love for Faith to Paul, and quietly accepts that Faith may choose a different future. Inside the church, where Rev. Ives presides, Faith searches for Cody, and Paul notices the depth of her hesitation. The two slip outside and, ultimately, decide to part ways for now.
Early on Christmas Day, Cody places a Christmas card on the family Christmas tree and leaves a handwritten note for Faith. The note reveals his love and says goodbye. Faith reads the message aloud, while Luke—her father—offers a poignant reminder: the letter didn’t bring Cody to Nevada City; Faith did. The film’s final scene centers on a quiet reunion at the Vietnam War veterans’ memorial, where Faith confronts Cody about not saying farewell. Before she can finish, he kisses her, and she embraces him, a hopeful acknowledgment that the magic they shared might still light a path forward.
