What Is The Chosen Ones About? (No Spoilers)

The plot of The Chosen Ones (2014) without spoilers: what it is about, who it follows and where it takes place, told without the twists or the ending. Enough to decide whether it is your next watch, not enough to ruin it.

In the late‑1970s, a spirited young biology teacher named Petra Grust arrives at the Odenwald School, a celebrated experiment in progressive, co‑educational boarding education. The campus pulses with the optimism of reform pedagogy: mixed‑gender showers, student‑run initiatives, and a culture that encourages freedom and self‑exploration. Yet beneath the veneer of enlightenment, the school’s daily rhythm carries an undercurrent of tension, as long‑standing hierarchies and unspoken expectations shape the lives of both pupils and staff.

Simon Pistorius, the charismatic headmaster revered for his educational philosophy, embodies the institution’s lofty ideals while presiding over its delicate balance of authority and intimacy. Petra quickly discovers that the school’s communal spirit masks complexities that are not easily voiced. Among the students, a quiet thirteen‑year‑old named Frank Hoffmann stands out, his demeanor hinting at deeper unease. As Petra takes on the role of caretaker, she begins to sense a discord between the school’s public image and the hidden struggles of its youngest members.

The film unfolds with a measured, introspective tone, blending the nostalgic textures of a bygone era with a quietly mounting sense of moral curiosity. It follows Petra as she navigates the contradictions of an institution that cherishes openness while resisting scrutiny, and as she confronts the weight of silence that can linger for decades. Against the backdrop of towering pines and the school's historic halls, the story invites viewers to contemplate the fragile line between idealism and the unsettling realities that sometimes linger beneath it.
