Set in the quiet Marais region along the Loire in 1918, the story follows Riton, who endures a sharp‑tongued wife and three unruly children, and Garris, a solitary man haunted by memories of the World War I trenches. Their routine revolves around seasonal work and occasional visits from their two friends: Tane, the local train conductor, and Amédée, a dream‑filled, voracious reader of classic literature.
