The Burning Sea

In 1969, the Norwegian government announces the discovery of one of the world's largest oil fields in the North Sea. This milestone sparks a wave of offshore drilling, primarily operated by American companies, with minimal training provided for the Norwegian workforce.

Fifty years later, the environmental repercussions of oil drilling begin to manifest, leading to a catastrophic event. A crack opens on the ocean floor, causing a drilling rig to collapse, which raises serious concerns among experts.

A team of researchers, including submarine operator Sofia, is dispatched to investigate the collapsed rig and assess the damage. Their mission becomes increasingly urgent as they uncover signs of a larger, impending disaster.

The team reaches the Ormen Lange rig, which is still under development. During their assessment, emergency manager William informs Sofia that minor ocean subsidence caused the rig's collapse, fueling the team's concerns about the safety of other rigs.

Sofia's primary task is to deploy robots to search for survivors trapped in air pockets within the collapsed rig. She finds a man alive but tragically witnesses his death due to the release of natural gas from an unidentified source.

Sofia determines that the underwater rig is leaking gas and promptly warns the ship's captain. However, the warning comes too late, resulting in a massive explosion when the gas escapes to the surface.

Following the explosion, Sofia sustains injuries and is sent back to base for treatment. She then contemplates her partner Stian's work on another oil rig, highlighting the personal stakes involved in the ongoing disaster.

William presents findings to Oil Minister Steiner Skagemo, explaining that the recent incidents stem from an ancient geological phenomenon. He warns that human drilling activities may have weakened the area surrounding the ocean shelf, increasing risks significantly.

As evacuation procedures commence, the Gullfaks rig shows critical errors when closing its wells. Stian and his team are dispatched for a manual shutdown, highlighting the urgency of the situation amidst the unfolding crisis.

While Stian is deep underwater performing shutdown procedures, the ocean shelf collapses, resulting in a fault line that decimates 30 oil rigs. Stian finds himself trapped as his own rig partially collapses.

Upon learning of Stian's entrapment, Sofia pleads with William for a rescue mission, but he initially refuses due to the dangers posed by the shifting shelf. However, Berit's vital observations keep hope alive that Stian may still be alive.

Sofia uses her connections to arrange a helicopter rescue mission to the damaged rig. Accompanied by Arthur, they launch a robot from their submersible to inspect for survivors, showcasing their determination and bravery.

Simultaneously, a significant oil spill emerges, with over 100,000 square kilometers affected. The ecological impact will devastate the west coast of Norway and threaten multiple neighboring countries, intensifying the urgency of the situation.

Sofia successfully locates Stian within the wreckage using a thermal camera. As their reunion unfolds, William takes drastic measures to set the oil spill ablaze before it spreads further.

As the flames from the oil spill encroach, Sofia and Stian attempt to escape in a lifeboat, but they face challenges launching it. In a selfless act, Arthur sacrifices himself to ensure Sofia and Stian escape as the flames close in.
