Bruno Everhard Nehemiah Persoff is the rigid and uncompromising owner of a German traveling circus. His four sons and daughter all work for the troupe, including as performers, and the internal dynamics of the family begin to strain under Bruno’s stern control. Three of the brothers, in particular Klaus Everard Robert Vaughn resents the favoritism Bruno shows one son, Josef Everard Cliff Robertson, who seems to receive the better treatment despite mounting tensions.
To curry his father's favor, Klaus abandons his sweetheart, circus aerialist Carlotta Martinez Margia Dean, to marry instead Teresa Vizzini Renate Mannhardt, whose father runs an animal menagerie Bruno would like to merge with. At the same time, Josef Everard has fallen in love with a wealthy American woman, Hillary Allen Esther Williams, who insists he quit the circus and start a new life beyond the tents.
Bruno’s household is further tested when his daughter defies him by marrying Eric Solden David Nelson, a soldier who longs to try the trapeze. Teresa, distraught upon learning why Klaus wed her, is tragically killed by one of the circus bears while in a dazed state. Carlotta, too, faces danger when a faulty high wire nearly ends her act, underscoring the circus’s precarious balance between showmanship and risk.
Negligence is charged, and Josef Everard Cliff Robertson accepts the blame, sparing Bruno from a prison sentence. The other brothers seize the moment to press their own ambitions and take control of the circus. Bruno makes a tentative comeback on the trapeze, but a heart attack proves fatal, ending his era in a single, dramatic act.
From prison, Josef Everard vows revenge, setting the stage for a crucible of family loyalties and revenge. Klaus Everard [Robert Vaughn] faces his reckoning and is killed when he missteps near the bear’s cage. In a final act aimed at breaking the cycle of violence and retribution, Josef Everard chooses a path away from vengeance, and Hillary Allen Esther Williams agrees to marry him, sealing a fragile truce for the future of the circus and the lives entwined within it.
