When the raft finally breaks apart, Des Kelly—the bigoted soldier who has caused so much grief—makes a last‑minute choice that redeems him. He blows up the raft with a grenade, killing the kamikaze pilot who had descended on them and buying Leo and Will a chance to reach the abandoned motorboat.

Inside the cramped hull, Will begins jury‑rigging the engine while Leo realizes that escaping the fog‑shrouded sea will be impossible unless the relentless 20‑foot shark is eliminated. Plunging into the dark water, Leo is haunted by flashbacks of a woman named Archie, the lover he once failed to save from a shark. In a hallucinatory moment she merges with the predator, but Leo summons his resolve, pulls the last grenade from his pack and detonates it against the beast, killing it at the cost of his own arm. The explosion gives him the closure he has been seeking—Archie’s apparition appears one final time, this time turning away, allowing Leo to let go of his guilt.

With the motorboat finally humming, the two men push away from the wreckage as the oppressive fog lifts and sunlight spills over the sea, suggesting a possible rescue. Yet the film ends on a cautionary note: a new silhouette of a shark darts beneath the surface, reminding us that nature’s threat endures and the survivors’ fate remains uncertain.
