The Bear That Couldn’t Sleep

Barney Bear, the gentle forest resident, greets the approaching winter with a calm routine: he settles into his den as autumn fades and a soft, white layer of snow begins to blanket the great brown woods. First comes the relentless drip of water from a leaky root, then a loose shutter that rattles in the cold, followed by a noisy, temperamental fire that crackles and spits. A teakettle left on the stove adds to the disturbance, and stray embers threaten to spark trouble at every turn. In an effort to preserve his rest, Barney places a clear, earnest sign on his front door reading “Do Not Disturb until Spring,” locks up tight, and sets an alarm to herald Spring when the time comes. He tucks himself into bed, hoping to ride out the chaos, but the misfortune keeps arriving in waves.

The first wave includes a leaking root that squirts water as he attempts to secure it, and then the hot water bottle bursts its cover, drenching him. Before he can even complain, the very root he tied begins to flood the space, soaking him from shoulder to sleeve. A gust of wind blows open the window, showering him with snow, and he hastily boards it up while the house rattles with winter’s breath. The fireplace then cracks and the kettle begins its whine, threatening to derail any chance of quiet.

When the kettle is pulled away from the fire, the whine subsides—yet the moment it is set down, it stirs again, shooting a puff of steam straight at his face. With the flames out, the next setback arrives not from nature but from fate itself: the wind slams the door shut with him on the outside, and the locks click into place as if granting a cruel punchline. He recalls the window he had barricaded, but in the chaos of the moment, he forgets the internal obstruction and attempts to burst through. A wall of furniture and household goods becomes an impenetrable obstacle, halting his progress. Frustration boils over, and he explodes into action, tearing through the barricade in a whirlwind of fury. The camera follows the chaotic ruin of his once-cozy den as every item is ripped apart. A bluebird chirps outside, a cheerful herald of renewal, and he lifts his head to peer at the hopeful sight beyond the window. For a moment, relief seems within reach.
