Rumors spread that Amelia has taken in a stranger and may have harmed him. Lymon uses his charm to win the townspeople over, inviting them into the mercantile and soothing their fears. The community begins to see him as a comforting presence.

Marvin, once cruel, had fallen for Amelia and proposed marriage. On their wedding night she attacked him, ending the relationship, while Marvin tries to win her back by offering his worldly possessions. Their volatile history fuels the current rivalry between Amelia and Marvin.
