Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, known as El Cid, falls for Jimena. When his father, the Count of Oviedo, challenges him to a duel, Rodrigo kills him and the dying count curses him, declaring that marrying Jimena will strip him of his masculine vigor. After the wedding, Rodrigo indeed becomes effeminate.
