Mary Hagen, a small‑town Ohio girl attending Jordan Junior College, is tormented by persistent rumors about her parentage. The return of Tom Bates, who inherits Judge Merrivale’s house and practice, fuels gossip and leads Mary to suspect he is her father. Wealthy suitor Ken loves her, but his circle constantly reminds him she isn’t “one of us.” Teacher Julia encourages Mary, yet she faces accusations at every turn, while Tom silently holds the key to her true identity.
