What Happens in Tenderness: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Tenderness (2018) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Lorenzo, an aging retired lawyer who has just suffered a heart attack, withdraws from his children, Elena and Saverio, while in hospital, with no real relationship to them. The only relative who shows him warmth is Francesco, the son Elena had while studying in Egypt to become an interpreter. When he returns home, he befriends the new neighbor Michela, who moved in with her husband Fabio and their two children to the apartment next door during his absence.

He grows fond of this northern family, especially Michela, who invites him to smile more and becomes a comforting presence in his solitary life. Very soon, Lorenzo learns that Fabio, a neurotic engineer, struggles to bond with his own children in the same way he feels unable to connect with his. One Sunday, while speaking with Michela, Lorenzo confesses that as a father he once loved his children, but as they grew up he became detached. Michela wonders aloud that this detachment could be a psychological shield to spare himself the pain of seeing them suffer. In that moment, he leaves the house.

That evening, upon his return, he discovers a horrific truth: Fabio has carried out a massacre of his children and then taken his own life. The sole survivor is Michela, who lies dying in the hospital. Lorenzo begins to visit her daily, posing as her father. During this period he also encounters Aurora, Fabio’s mother, a paranoid figure unable to sustain relationships since her own childhood, and he revisits his old lover Rossana, whose current life choices appear to have contributed to the unraveling of Lorenzo’s marriage.

The bitter revelation follows: Lorenzo is not Michela’s father, and a restraining order is issued against him. It emerges that, across his professional life, he won many cases but repeatedly cheated the state by aiding false invalids or engaging in scams. As Michela dies, Lorenzo leaves his home, a departure that unsettles his daughter Elena, who, despite his silence, has always worried about him. A few days later, he attends a court session where Elena works as an interpreter. When the session ends, she finds her father on a bench outside the court; she sits beside him, and, without a word, he offers a quiet, shared gesture by shaking her hand.

Tenderness Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Tenderness (2018): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Lorenzo refuse to speak with his children while in the hospital?

Lorenzo had become emotionally detached from his children Elena and Saverio as they grew older. His silence in the hospital reflected a lifelong pattern of withdrawing from emotional connections rather than confronting them. This detachment was later confirmed when he admitted to Michela that he once loved his children when they were young but grew distant as they aged.

  • lorenzo children hospital silence emotional detachment
Q2

Why was Fabio unable to bond with his own children?

Fabio was described as a neurotic engineer who struggled to form emotional connections with his children. This inability mirrored Lorenzo's own failed relationship with his offspring, suggesting the film explores how some people are constitutionally incapable of sustaining parental bonds, whether due to personality traits or psychological barriers.

  • fabio children bonding neurotic engineer emotional inability
Q3

What caused Fabio to kill his children and himself?

The film does not explicitly state Fabio's motive, but the timing is significant. He committed the act immediately after Lorenzo left Michela's house following his confession about emotional detachment from his own children. Fabio's inability to bond with his children, combined with the conversation about psychological shields against pain, appears to have triggered his breakdown.

Foreshadowing: The Sunday confession about parental detachment directly preceded the tragedy.

Q4

Why did Lorenzo pose as Michela's father at the hospital?

After the massacre, Michela was the sole survivor but lay dying in the hospital. Lorenzo visited her daily, pretending to be her father, to maintain a connection with her and perhaps to fill the paternal role he had failed to fulfill with his own children. This act represented his attempt at redemption through caregiving.

Q5

What was the paternity revelation and restraining order about?

Lorenzo discovered he was not actually Michela's biological father, which came as a bitter revelation given his emotional investment in her. A restraining order was subsequently issued against him, likely because his prolonged visits while pretending to be her father, combined with this discovery, raised concerns about his actions and intentions.

Q7

What happened after Michela died in the hospital?

After Michela died, Lorenzo left his home, which worried his daughter Elena who had always cared about him despite his distance. This departure represented another form of withdrawal, but it also set in motion the final reconciliation scene at the courthouse where Lorenzo would finally reach out to Elena.

  • michela death lorenzo leaves home elena worry
Q8

What did the final handshake between Lorenzo and Elena signify?

The silent handshake at the courthouse represented Lorenzo's first physical and emotional connection with his daughter Elena in years. After a lifetime of withdrawal and following the devastating events with Michela's family, this quiet gesture hinted at the possibility of reconciliation without spoken words, embodying the film's themes of imperfect healing.

Q9

Who was Michela and why was she important to Lorenzo?

Michela was Lorenzo's new neighbor who moved in with her husband Fabio and their two children. She invited Lorenzo to smile more and became a comforting presence in his solitary life. Through her, Lorenzo experienced a sense of family he had lost with his own children, and her tragic fate became the catalyst for his final attempts at connection.

Q10

Who was Rossana and what was her connection to Lorenzo?

Rossana was Lorenzo's old lover whose current life choices had contributed to the unraveling of his marriage. During the period after the massacre, Lorenzo revisited this relationship, suggesting that his past personal failures, both with family and romantic partners, were part of the larger pattern of disconnection the film explores.
