Terry Nelson, formerly known as Emily King, arrives in Taos, New Mexico, with a complex and troubled past. She seeks out her estranged father, Preston King, a renowned author, but she doesn’t know his exact location. Growing up, Terry faced a difficult childhood after her father abandoned her and her mother, Emily, when she was just two years old. Her mother developed a deep resentment towards men and often criticized Terry for her feelings of love for her father and her teenage relationship, which fueled Terry’s own feelings of rejection and anger.

Her journey takes her to an art gallery where she meets Reynaldo “Reggie” Gonzales, the gallery owner. Preston invites Terry and Valerie to a dinner at Reggie’s party, where the two women clash. During the party, Terry and Reggie flirt, sharing a moment of connection when she reveals that, at 13, she was raped by a friend of Preston’s, leading to a deep, supportive kiss between them. She then seeks to gather more information about Preston’s personal life, learning details about his relationship with Victoria Hughes, his current girlfriend.

As the story progresses, Terry’s relationship with Reggie deepens as they go on a picnic. During this quiet moment, she plans to spy on Preston and Victoria from a distance. After causing a distraction so Preston can be alone, she observes Preston and Victoria sharing a passionate moment—though Victoria quickly recognizes Terry’s plot and warns Preston, who begins to neglect Victoria.

Preston, wanting to mend the situation, invites Terry and Reggie inside for drinks, but he remains dismissive when Victoria confronts him about her concerns. Meanwhile, Terry takes on Elena’s work herself, but eventually Elena resigns, citing family reasons. Strained, Preston and Victoria’s relationship ends, leading Terry to move into a guest room in Preston’s house, and their connection begins to grow more intimate. She questions him about his past marriage and children, learning that Preston’s wife and daughter parted ways when they were very young, with Preston having paid support until his daughter turned 18, but remaining absent from her life ever since.

Terry confides her own painful story of abandonment, and Preston expresses sympathy, remarking that he can’t imagine her father not wanting to see her. As their romance intensifies, they publicly display their affection, and Preston finishes his novel, telling Terry he’ll be taking a break from writing but inviting her to stay. She later delivers her paintings to Preston’s gallery, where her interactions with Reggie become tense—an encounter that culminates in her kissing him, which Preston witnesses, leading to his anger and departure.

Back at Preston’s house, Terry and Preston reconcile, surrendering to their growing feelings and ultimately sharing an intimate night together. However, just as their relationship reaches a pivotal moment, Terry experiences a hallucination of her mother, urging her to reveal the truth. In a moment of emotional turmoil, she confronts Preston with a shocking revelation: she is his daughter, Emily, and they have just been physically involved, an act that horrifies Preston. Terry, however, refuses to share her reasons and instead berates him for his past actions.

This intense confrontation turns out to be a vivid fantasy in Terry’s mind, as she is still in the bathroom contemplating her next move. Gaining empathy for Preston, she chooses not to reveal her true identity and instead tells him that she loves him before they sleep together. Quietly, she packs her belongings and whispers goodbye to her father, quietly leaving while he sleeps, leaving their relationship unresolved but deeply changed.
