Eric Khoo's animated Tatsumi uses A Drifting Life as its biographical spine, following Yoshihiro Tatsumi's postwar childhood, admiration for Tezuka, entry into rented-book manga, artistic community, family strain, and development of gekiga. The film intercuts this life with animated versions of five separate Tatsumi short stories, material not contained in the memoir. It condenses an enormous chronology and uses the author's narration, making the autobiography a primary but partial source within a composite portrait of life and fiction.
