What Happens in Bakuman: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Bakuman (2015) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

High school students Moritaka Mashiro and Akito Takagi, one an aspiring artist and the other a budding writer, embark on an exciting journey to collaborate and create a captivating manga series. Moritaka, fueled by his desire to impress his crush, Miho Azuki—played by Nana Komatsu—makes a heartfelt promise to her. He vows that she will voice a character in the anime adaptation of his manga and that they will marry once he has made it big in the industry.

The duo successfully pitches their manga concept to Weekly Shōnen Jump, which is the most prestigious manga magazine in Japan. Their hard work pays off when they secure the second place in the highly coveted Tezuka Awards. As they navigate their way through the competitive world of manga, they befriend fellow creators Shinta Fukuda (portrayed by Kenta Kiritani), Kazuya Hiramaru (played by Hirofumi Arai), and Takuro Nakai (acted by Sarutoki Minagawa). However, their journey is not without challenges as they face off against their formidable peer Eiji Niizuma, played by Shota Sometani, who ultimately becomes their rivalry throughout the series.

After ambitious efforts, Mashiro and Takagi finally receive a serialization opportunity in Weekly Shōnen Jump. With guidance from their editor, Akira Hattori—portrayed by Takayuki Yamada—they make a solemn vow to outshine Eiji and claim the top spot in the magazine's reader rankings. However, life throws them a curveball when Mashiro encounters a health issue, leading Sasaki—played by Lily Franky, the editor-in-chief of Weekly Shōnen Jump—to decide on putting their manga on hiatus until their high school graduation.

Despite this setback, the resilience of their friendship shines through. With the encouragement of their peers, Mashiro and Takagi manage to create a new chapter that not only sways Sasaki to reconsider their situation, but also propels them to the number one spot in the rankings momentarily. Unfortunately, their triumph is cut short as their manga faces cancellation shortly thereafter.

As the film concludes, we find Mashiro and Takagi on their final day of high school, filled with enthusiasm and determination as they passionately discuss their future endeavors related to their next manga project, setting the stage for new beginnings in their creative journey.
