Taiwan faces increasing pressure from China, which views the island as a breakaway province that must eventually reunite with the mainland. This burgeoning democracy, home to 24 million people and boasting its own constitution and democratically elected leaders, has resisted China’s influence, especially after the experiences of Hong Kong. Driven by digital technology and fueled by movements like the 2014 Sunflower Movement, citizens are demanding greater transparency from institutions and striving to maintain their vibrant democracy in the shadow of China’s ambitions.
