Feeling that her life has been a series of failures, 70-year-old bà Đại decides to take her funeral portrait before she becomes too old and frail. However, a miraculous event occurs during the photoshoot, transforming her back into her 20-year-old self. Unable to return home due to her new appearance, she adopts the name Thanh Nga and rents a room from her dear friend, ông Bé.

Determined to live without regrets, she pursues her lifelong dream of singing. Her stunning voice catches the attention of several people, including Tùng, ông Bé, and the talent producer Mạnh Đức, who is working alongside his assistant Min Ji. After joining Tùng's band and refining their style, they are selected by Mạnh Đức for a major talent show.

Conflict arises when ông Bé finds bà Đại's belongings in the room, leading him to suspect that Thanh Nga has murdered the elderly woman. After a chaotic confrontation, she reveals her true identity to him, and he agrees to keep her secret. As she gains fame, she balances her budding relationship with Mạnh Đức and the unwitting jealousy of her grandson, Tùng.

The story reaches a climax when Tùng is seriously injured in a truck accident. In a selfless act of love, Thanh Nga agrees to donate her blood to save him. This sacrifice triggers the end of the miracle, and she transforms back into the 70-year-old bà Đại. Ultimately, the family finds peace; Nhon takes over as the vocalist for the band, and bà Đại finds happiness in the legacy she left behind and her connection with Mạnh Đức.

Sweet 20 Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Sweet 20 (2015): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Mrs. Dai decide to take a funeral portrait photo?

Mrs. Dai felt that her life had been full of failure and regret, and she was anxious about her old age catching up to her. Convinced that she would pass away before becoming too old and ugly, she decided to shoot a portrait at a photography shop while she still felt presentable. Ironically, that visit to the studio is exactly where her miraculous transformation into her 20-year-old self takes place, turning a gesture of despair into the start of a new life.

Foreshadowing: Her decision to prepare for death is framed as a final act of dignity, which makes the rebirth that follows even more poignant.

Q2

How was Mrs. Dai transformed back into a 20-year-old?

While Mrs. Dai was preparing for her portrait at the photography shop, a strange miracle silently occurs and turns her 70-year-old body into the 20-year-old woman she used to be. She does not notice the change immediately and only realizes what has happened once she is sitting on the bus, stunned by her youthful reflection. The film treats the event as a piece of magical realism rather than explaining it through any scientific or supernatural mechanism.

Q3

Why couldn't Mrs. Dai return home after becoming young again?

Because her appearance changed completely, Mrs. Dai could no longer prove she was the grandmother of Quang, Vy, Nhon, and Tung. Facing a family that would not recognize her, and having no way to explain her sudden youth, she chose to start a brand-new life under a new identity instead. That decision leads her to rent a room at her old friend Mr. Be's house under the name Thanh Nga.

Q4

Why did Mr. Be accuse Thanh Nga of murdering Mrs. Dai?

While searching Thanh Nga's rented room, Mr. Be discovers belongings that clearly belong to his missing elderly friend Mrs. Dai. Since a young woman named Thanh Nga is now living in his house and 70-year-old Mrs. Dai has seemingly vanished, he jumps to the conclusion that Thanh Nga has killed her. He even tries to tie her up to interrogate her, but Thanh Nga turns the tables on him and reveals the truth instead.

Q5

How does Thanh Nga's youthful appearance become fragile?

Mr. Be discovers that whenever Thanh Nga bleeds, she physically ages. This implies that her young body is a borrowed, unstable miracle rather than a permanent state, and any injury or blood loss risks reverting her back to her real age. It also sets up the eventual sacrifice where donating blood to Tung costs her the youth she gained.

Foreshadowing: A small cut or scrape instantly aging her reveals that the miracle has strict limits.

Q6

Why did Duyen throw Thanh Nga out of Mr. Be's house?

Duyen, Mr. Be's daughter, walks in on the suspicious situation and immediately assumes that her father is having a romantic affair with the much younger Thanh Nga. Outraged and protective of her father, she angrily orders Thanh Nga to leave. The misunderstanding is built on the age gap and the secretive atmosphere around Thanh Nga, neither of which Duyen can possibly interpret correctly.

Foreshadowing: The secrecy around Thanh Nga's true identity naturally invites the worst possible reading from strangers.

Q7

Why does Tung get jealous of Manh Duc and Thanh Nga?

Because Thanh Nga has to temporarily stay at producer Manh Duc's house after being kicked out, the two spend a lot of unsupervised time together and Manh Duc begins developing romantic feelings for her. Tung, who is also falling for the mysterious singer, sees this closeness and gets jealous, not knowing that the woman he is competing for is actually his own grandmother. His jealousy is genuine but tragically ironic given the family relationship he cannot see.

Q8

Why did Tung rush back home for his grandfather's hat right before the liveshow?

Tung returns home to collect his late grandfather's hat, treating it as a meaningful, sentimental item he wants to have with him during the important performance. Because the show is about to start, he has to drive fast to make it back in time, and that urgency is what puts him in the path of the truck that hits him. The hat symbolizes family pride, which makes the accident hit even harder for the family.

Foreshadowing: The grandfather's hat connects Tung to his grandfather before the moment when his grandmother will sacrifice for him.

Q9

Why does donating blood to Tung turn Thanh Nga back into Mrs. Dai?

Earlier in the story, Mr. Be learns that Thanh Nga ages whenever she loses blood, which establishes that her borrowed youth is tied to her physical body. When Tung is hospitalized after the accident, Thanh Nga agrees to donate blood to save him, and the blood loss triggers the exact condition that had been hinted at. Once the donation is finished, her magical youth fades away and she transforms back into her real 70-year-old self.

Foreshadowing: Mr. Be's earlier discovery that she ages when she bleeds directly foreshadows the blood donation ending her youth.

Q10

Why does Mrs. Dai smile at Manh Duc at the end of the movie?

During her time as Thanh Nga, Mrs. Dai and producer Manh Duc built a close bond, and he openly fell in love with her young persona. After she returns to being a 70-year-old grandmother, the final image shows her stepping out of the theater and smiling happily at Manh Duc. It hints at a possible romantic future between them, suggesting that the connection they built as Thanh Nga and Manh Duc might survive the end of her youthful disguise and continue in her real identity.

Q11

What is the significance of Tung's song 'Minh Yeu Tu Bao Gio'?

Minh Yeu Tu Bao Gio is a song composed by Tung himself, which makes it the most personal number in his band's repertoire. Thanh Nga performs it on the liveshow stage right after his accident, turning the song into both a tribute to him and a plea for his survival. Singing his own composition while he fights for his life in the hospital gives the performance an emotional weight that pushes it into a huge success.

Q12

Why does Thanh Nga preach to a teenager about respecting elders at the pool?

Even though she looks like a 20-year-old, Thanh Nga carries the lived experience and traditional values of a 70-year-old grandmother. When she sees a teenager behaving disrespectfully toward an older person, her real nature comes out instinctively and she scolds the youth the way a grandmother would. It is one of the clearest comic moments in the film because her body, her age, and her attitude are all out of sync at the same time.
