In East Germany at the close of the 1970s, best friends Fred and Jonas, both ten years old, live near the border separating East and West Germany. When Jonas’s mother applies to emigrate, the boys face the prospect of separation. Determined to stay together, they embark on a fantastical plan to dig a tunnel to Australia. However, the night Jonas is scheduled to leave the country with his mother throws their plans into disarray and changes everything.
