The story unfolds as a stark flashback told by John Stevenson, a man strapped to a chair and subjected to torture, who recalls the events that led him to this moment. The memory begins with a quiet Christmas Eve: Mrs. Jean Stevenson and their children gather around a warmly lit tree, and their daughter Peggy Lee Stevenson lends a hand as laughter and cautious anticipation fill the room. What starts as a wholesome family moment quickly shifts toward an uneasy journey, as Stevenson and an old friend set out in a small plane for a fishing and camping holiday in a remote, secluded region, hoping to return home by Friday the 13th.
Trouble arrives in the form of mechanical failure mid-flight, forcing a crash-landing in a field far from help. At a nearby farmhouse, the resident farmer refuses to let them use the phone or seek shelter, while a Truck Driver gives Stevenson a ride into town for a steep $20, and offers little by way of explanation for his own peculiar behavior. The main street that should hum with life is instead eerily empty, and Stevenson encounters Miss Sims, his secretary, who remains reticent and withdrawn. The atmosphere grows tense as he reaches his office to discover it deserted, and the sense of a world turned upside down becomes undeniable.
Stevenson pursues answers back at his home, only to find that his wife and children are nowhere to be found. Before he can make sense of the disappearance, two men grab him and he is knocked unconscious. He awakens in a jail cell where an Examiner is waiting to question him about his whereabouts, denying him a lawyer and insisting on controlling the narrative. The examiner outlines a chilling image of a new America: religion has been wiped away, free speech is forbidden, and punishment is meted out to anyone who dares to dissent or oppose the regime. Stevenson is branded an enemy of the state, his fate sealed by the cold logic of a society transformed beyond recognition.
In solitary confinement, Stevenson’s mind drifts between despair and a glimmer of hope, as he dreams of an alternate future where life unfolds differently. He envisions a picnic with a different family and, more piercingly, a grown daughter who is being courted, a memory that underscores what he longs to protect. When he finally awakens, the line between dream and reality blurs, and he resolves that he cannot bear to continue living under this oppressive order.
The film then returns to the camping scene, only to reveal that the entire troubling sequence may have been nothing more than a bad dream. The final fades suggest that what seemed like a present danger was, in a twist of fate, a mental escape or a cautionary reverie rather than a concrete conspiracy, leaving Stevenson, and the audience, to wonder about the lines between reality and nightmare.
