After seeing a 1937 photograph of a Southern lynching, Bronx teacher Abel Meeropol wrote the poem “Strange Fruit,” opening “Southern trees bear a strange fruit / Blood on the leaves and blood at the root.” He set it to music and persuaded Billie Holiday to record a powerful, heartbreaking version. Director Joel Katz combines jazz history, biography, archival performance footage and the legacy of lynching to uncover the hidden origins of this American classic.
