Strange New World

In this film, viewers are taken on a captivating journey through the mysterious world of Avalonia, a land filled with strange creatures and hidden secrets. However, Jaeger, more concerned with his own curiosities, dismisses the plant, leaving Searcher to plead passionately for his father’s attention. Despite his efforts, Jaeger gives Searcher a compass and departs alone, vanishing from his son’s life and leaving behind a bittersweet memory.

Fast forward to the present day, where Searcher now lives a peaceful life on a farm, harvesting Pando—a plant he uncovered during the expedition that has become the primary energy source in Avalonia. Searcher resides with his devoted wife Meridian, a skilled pilot played by [Gabrielle Union], and their curious son Ethan, played by [Jaboukie Young-White]. They also have a three-legged dog named Legend. Ethan is a lively, inquisitive boy who often spends time with friends, including his crush Diazo. During one of his visits with his father, Ethan receives a special trading card from Diazo, which deeply touches him. Searcher, however, shows his protective side when he embarrasses Ethan in front of his friends, indicating his concern about Ethan’s future and his own past.

One evening, the Clades are approached by Callisto Mal, a formidable leader of Avalonia and a former crew member of Jaeger, played by [Lucy Liu]. Callisto warns them that Pando is deteriorating and that urgent action is needed to prevent catastrophe in Avalonia. Searcher joins her aboard her ship, the Venture, as they embark on a dangerous descent through a sinkhole that leads them into the underground world beneath Avalonia. During this mission, Meridian, Searcher’s wife, is able to help repair the ship, only to discover that Ethan and their dog Legend secretly stowed away on the vessel, eager for adventure.

As the crew navigates this hidden world, they are suddenly attacked by strange pink pterodactyl-like creatures. The Venture crashes, forcing Searcher and Legend to part ways with the crew and find themselves in a world teeming with terrifying creatures and giant tentacle monsters called Reapers. Their journey takes a surprising turn when they encounter Jaeger, who initially believes Searcher to be a hallucination until the discovery of his compass confirms his identity. Jaeger, who appears disheveled and unrecognizable at first, admits that he had long ago felt compelled to explore beyond the mountains. His desire to see what lies beyond them ultimately caused him to leave his family behind.

Meanwhile, Meridian assists Callisto in repairing their ship while Ethan encounters a small, blue, amoeba-like creature named Splat. Ethan’s kindness shines through as he tends to Splat’s burns after an accidental touch with Pando rocks—an element that appears to zap energy from living things. Ethan’s curiosity leads him closer to the core of the mystery surrounding Avalonia and Pando. His explorations bring him face-to-face with his grandfather and his father, whom he encounters for the first time amidst a dangerous attack by Reapers and other creatures. These encounters with his ancestors mark a pivotal moment in Ethan’s understanding of his family history.

Throughout their adventure, tensions rise between Searcher and Jaeger, with the latter yearning to keep exploring uncharted territories, while Searcher prioritizes the safety of their loved ones. Despite Ethan’s attempt to bridge the gap through trading cards, their differences create friction. The crew travels through perilous regions filled with green gas clouds, fighting off more dangerous creatures, utilizing the Pando rock’s energy to weaken their enemies. A heartfelt moment occurs when Searcher and Jaeger finally share a sincere conversation, perhaps even a reconciliation, as they contemplate their shared past and uncertain future. However, worries about Ethan’s fascination with exploration persist, hinting at future conflicts.

Their journey culminates in discovering that Avalonia itself is a colossal living creature, with Pando growing around its heart and threatening its life. The revelation that Avalonia has been alive all along is staggering, and the true battle begins as Ethan, Searcher, Meridian, Jaeger, and the crew work together to save this enormous being. Ethan’s determination leads them toward the creature’s core, where they confront the danger of the Pando cluster which is damaging its vital organs. During this intense confrontation, Jaeger once again takes matters into his own hands, diverging from the plan to explore further, risking everything.

As the climax unfolds, the team manages to break through the Pando’s grasp and destroy the harmful energy source. In a moment of hope, tiny orange organisms emerge to regenerate Avalonia’s heart, restoring vitality to the creature. The crew then witnesses the magnificence of the living world they had only begun to understand, with Jaeger finally fulfilling his exploratory dreams. A year later, Ethan chooses to stay in the underground world alongside Splat and Diazo, embracing a new life filled with wonder and curiosity. Meanwhile, Avalonia has transitioned to wind turbines for energy, signaling a harmonious coexistence with nature. Ethan writes a heartfelt letter to his father, Searcher, assuring him that he’s doing well. Jaeger visits his ex-wife and her new husband, and in the end, Searcher and Jaeger reconnect through farm work, bonding over the years they lost but also the new understanding they’ve gained.
