Strange Darling

Strange Darling plays with narrative structure and character roles to challenge perceptions of victims and villains. As the story unfolds non-linearly, we see that the initial impression of Lady as a helpless victim and Demon as the dangerous killer is turned on its head. It turns out that Lady is actually the notorious serial killer, dubbed the Electric Lady, while Demon is her intended victim. This twist is revealed in the second chapter when Lady discovers Demon’s true identity as a police officer, which explains his possession of guns and his obvious danger. The story’s beginning, seeming to follow a typical victim-perpetrator pattern, is intentionally misleading, as the film’s core message appears to question the trust placed in women claiming to be victims.

Throughout the film, Lady manipulates those around her, portraying herself as vulnerable to gain sympathy and support, even killing her victims afterward. Her interactions with Demon include a roleplay involving violence and drugs, highlighting her willingness to blur the lines between reality and performance. She drugs Demon with ketamine, subduing him, and later attacks him, revealing her predatory nature. Lady’s kills are brutal and calculated, often disguising her true nature behind the facade of innocence. The climax sees Lady fleeing in a small car after a violent confrontation with Demon, whom she wounds but does not kill outright.

Lady’s cunning and deception continue to the very end, as she kills a woman named Genevieve and frames her as a victim to cover her tracks. She also manipulates the police into believing her story, pretending to be helpless in front of officers and even feigning victimization during her arrest. Her final revelation is that she sees monsters instead of people, implying her inability to perceive others as human, which underscores her psychopathic and manipulative personality. The ending leaves her on the run with her true nature exposed but still dangerous, suggesting that her evil persists despite her apparent demise. Ultimately, Strange Darling is a disturbing meditation on deception, gender roles, and the thin line between victim and villain in a world designed to deceive.
