Dennis Dennis Brown lives in a Red Hook housing project in Brooklyn, where poverty gnaws at him and he witnesses his alcoholic father, Ray Brown, brutalize his mother, Carolyn Brown. This gritty setting frames a plan that will pull him toward danger rather than safety.

Desperate for a way out, Dennis teams up with two friends to rob a local drug dealer, hoping a quick score will let him move out of the neighborhood and change their lives. One friend asks his uncle to borrow a car, and through another connection they acquire a shotgun for the operation. Dennis keeps the real plan from his girlfriend, who is left in the dark until the moment it’s too late. When he finally explains what he intends to do, she ends the relationship, and the heartbreak compounds the family strain. Meanwhile, Dennis’s mother loses her job due to the bruises and the ongoing violence at home, tightening the family’s precarious grip on poverty.

On the day of the robbery, Dennis and his two friends wait in the car for the dealer to come out with a briefcase full of cash. As the dealer steps out, Dennis points the gun in his face and orders him to hand over the bag, but he does not fire; the dealer complies, and they speed off. The dealer, who has seen their faces, is ordered by the gangster he works for to recover the money, and he goes out to find them.

Back home, the haul is far larger than expected. Fear and greed kick in, and the two friends panic, deciding they want nothing to do with the cash. They leave Dennis to shoulder the risk, and a rift forms in the group.

Dennis brings the money home to show his family and tells them they can move out of the projects, but his father reacts with anger. The confrontation escalates into renewed violence, and his mother must be hospitalized for injuries.

The next day at the hospital, the dealer who was robbed spots Dennis’s father outside to take a breath and recognizes him. He and his accomplices close in from both sides and shoot him dead. At the same time, inside the hospital, Carolyn Brown dies with her son and daughter by her side. The closing shot lingers on the bloodied father, lying dead against a fence, a stark reminder of how quickly life can unravel when violence enters a family’s daily world.
