The story unfolds in the immediate postwar era, a time of significant regional tensions and entrenched racial hierarchies in the American South. Amid political pressure, authorities struggle with how to pursue justice in a climate of fear.

Rock Point is a small Southern town depicted as insular and wary of outsiders.
