Stolen: Heist of the Century

The film closes with the police finally closing the net around the thieves. After the investigators trace the discarded garbage in Floordambos Woods – a mix of specialized tools, an altered Allen key and a half‑eaten sandwich – DNA links the evidence to Leonardo Notarbartolo, the man who had posed as a legitimate diamond dealer while secretly planning the robbery. With the help of the intercepted SIM‑card logs, the police locate his rented Antwerp flat, seize the apartment, and arrest Notarbartolo as he returns from a normal‑looking day at the Diamond Center. The other members of the crew – alarm specialist Elio D’Onorio, his associate Ferdinando Finotto, and longtime friend Pietro Tavarno – are also captured, while the mysterious locksmith who forged the custom keys remains at large.

In court the documentary shows Notarbartolo sentenced to ten years behind bars, insisting he was only a pawn, while his conspirators receive five‑year terms. The stolen diamonds and jewels, worth more than a hundred million dollars, are never recovered; the film suggests the loot was quickly liquidated, and rumors persist that Notarbartolo walked away with a considerable share, though no proof surfaces.

The closing moments turn back to Agim De Bruycker, the veteran officer who led the early investigation. Years later he is dismissed from the force after being caught with illicit diamonds of uncertain origin. He claims they belong to another case, but the authorities remain skeptical, hinting that even the “Heist of the Century” may still have hidden layers. The documentary ends on this ambiguous note, leaving viewers to wonder whether the true treasure – and the full story – still lie somewhere in the shadows of Antwerp’s diamond district.
