Miserable, lazy farmer Nils‑Erik tolerates his domineering wife Matilda, but cannot accept that she constantly falls for neighbor Valdemar’s flattery. Their son Lennart inherits his mother’s irritability and his father’s indolence, feeling like a failure. When Nils‑Erik hatches a plan, he wonders if involving the local postman Dag‑Otto is wise.
