The film presents itself as a historical documentary, using long, slow shots of urban sites and landscapes in Saxony and Thuringia, former regions of the German Democratic Republic. Through a combination of archival materials like police reports, survivor accounts, and administrative correspondence, a narration reveals the significance of these places in March 1933. The documentary explores the origins of the Nazi concentration system and the regime’s elimination of political opposition, focusing on the experiences of early victims including communists, activists, trade unionists, and journalists.
