A moonlit coastal night pulls a wary lover into a maze of memory, deception, and violence, where every face might hide a motive and every ally could be an adversary. Christian, Robert Hoffmann the protagonist, visits a secluded beach and pauses to check on a woman lying face-down in the sand. She introduces herself as Barbara, Suzy Kendall and leaves in a hurry, forgetting her flask. Unable to shake Barbara from his thoughts, Christian uses the inscription on the flask to track her down, drawn by a fragile thread that seems to connect them even before they truly know each other.

The pair cross paths again at a party aboard a boat moored at the local marina, where Barbara invites him back to her motel. The invitation comes with a twinge of danger and the complicating presence of her lover, Alex, Mario Erpichini. The drive to the motel winds through a wooded stretch, where mannequins in lingerie swing eerily in the breeze, a stark prelude to the psyche-scrambling events to come. Within this atmosphere of allure and threat, Christian opens up about a brutal childhood incident with his father, while Barbara explains that Alex is not truly her partner but more of a provider, keeping her tethered to a fragile arrangement.

An unusual request marks Barbara’s curiosity: Christian must shave his beard before they take their intimacy further; he complies. The moment he shaves, a noise fractures the room. He pokes his head out the window and is met by a man with a gun. The intruder, Tatum, Adolfo Lastretti, storms the bathroom, threatening Christian in a tense confrontation that ends with Tatum being shot and killed. Christian returns to Barbara and lays bare what happened, only to find Barbara eerily unfazed by the dead man in her room. She urges them to vanish, to disappear, to escape the chill of what feels like a planned end.

They flee to a seaside castle and lighthouse where a friend’s place offers a temporary refuge. Christian hopes his brother Fritz Baumann, Ivan Rassimov, can help them, but Barbara resists involving anyone else, clinging to a sense that they must face this alone. Their fragile alliance fractures when two squatters, Malcolm Guido Alberti and Clorinda Monica Monet, interrupt the couple. Malcolm needles Christian with rumors of a local murder, a tease that the truth may already be spreading through whispers and headlines. Malcolm’s joke about Tatum’s death unsettles Christian, who fears the worst, though Malcolm’s timing suggests there’s more here than mere mischief.

The night deepens the confusion: Christian, shaken, tries to sleep, only to be drawn back into the circle when Clorinda hints that she knows him in unsettling ways, leading to a possibly hallucinatory rape scene that unsettles the house further. The next morning Barbara is gone from the seaside motel, leaving behind a void and many questions. Christian searches the room and finds no body, no weapon, and no clear clue as to what really happened.

With no clear answers, Christian heads to the marina, followed by an ominous figure, and then retreats to the tower where he glimpses Malcolm in conversation with the same mysterious man. The sense of being watched grows as Christian discovers that the well next to the tower holds more than water in its dark depths. He watches the world tilt and spin around him while the narrative threads tighten, and he begins to fear that someone has orchestrated his downfall to seize control of the family fortune.

Seeking safety, Christian returns to the place of his earliest memories: his original girlfriend’s apartment. There, Tatum returns, still very much alive, and forces him to drive toward a quarry. Tatum explains that the plan was never to kill Christian outright but to push him toward madness; since Christian stubbornly resists, the killer must die. A bid at an accident—driving toward the edge of a cliff—leads to a brutal reversal: Christian overpowers Tatum, driving the car and striking him before finally pushing him off the precipice.

In a chilling turn, Christian mimics the dead man’s identity, swapping clothes, placing the necklace on Tatum, and dumping the corpse into the sea or the car’s memory of the crime as he pushes it off the cliff. Barbara and Luca arrive to confirm the supposed death, and Christian trails them back to the family factory where Fritz now presides. The conspiracy becomes explicit: the challenge was to drive Christian mad so he would be unable to claim his rightful place, and Barbara admits she has fallen for Christian, exhausted by the scheming of Luca and Fritz who want her to go along with the plan.

Christian wanders the roads in disguise, even as he is drawn toward a final act of vulnerability—he becomes a male prostitute for a female client, seeking a desolate sense of control in a world that has spun out of his grasp. After a bitter confrontation at the factory, Luca and Barbara prepare to flee, but Christian interrupts with a brutal, hard-won truth: he knows their plot. Barbara confesses everything, and the pair momentarily reconcile, planning to escape together.

Yet the fragile peace shatters as Christian begins to see the faces of those he has encountered—Clorinda’s face, his ex-girlfriend’s, and the anonymous woman who picked him up for sex—and in a final, desperate act he chokes Barbara to death and runs. The aftermath reveals a deeper horror: Fritz uncovers a history of hereditary madness that links Christian’s father to the family’s legacy. A cascade of revelations follows—Clorinda was the nurse at the psychiatric hospital and Malcolm the doctor—and the body count climbs as Christian’s mental state fractures further.

The climax arrives in a brutal confrontation: Alex shoots the wounded Christian, who nevertheless staggers away to bleed out on the familiar beach. He dies where the story began, but the late-stage revelation persists: Fritz returns home, drawn to a closet full of lingerie-clad mannequins and their puncture marks, and, as a final voiceover returns, the insanity—like the inheritance—has been handed down. Fritz picks up a knife and advances toward the nearest mannequin, knitting together a grim manifesto of inherited madness that refuses to be laid to rest.
