The Turning

The film opens on a dark and stormy night at a luxurious yet isolated estate nestled in the woods. As the tension mounts, a terrified woman desperately attempts to escape the property, racing to her car in an effort to flee. From a bedroom window, a young girl named Flora gazes out anxiously as the woman reaches the estate’s gates, only to be confronted by a shadowy figure that grips her throat, halting her escape.

Fast forward to a little time later, where a new governess named Kate is introduced; she accedes to the daunting task of caring for two children, Flora and Miles, at their affluent plantation. The call to duty resonates with Kate, a former orphan herself, whose tumultuous past began when her father abandoned her mother, leading to her mother’s subsequent descent into madness and a life confined in an asylum, where she busies herself creating impenetrable art. With a heavy heart, Kate bids farewell to her mother before embarking on the journey to the estate.

Upon her arrival, she is met by the cold and aloof housekeeper, Mrs. Grose. Kate quickly bonds with Flora, who reveals her unsettling fact: she’s never left the estate grounds. One evening, Flora discloses her trepidation regarding the eerie East Wing of the house, where she has never set foot. Intrigued, Kate’s curiosity leads her into the East Wing, where she finds herself ensnared by an encroaching darkness. After a harrowing escape, she encounters the increasingly unsettling presence of Miles, who has just returned from boarding school.

In the light of day, Kate discovers more about Miles’s troubling behavior; his school headmaster informs her that he was expelled after brutally attacking a classmate. Throughout the film, Mrs. Grose’s dismissive and nagging demeanor only adds to Kate’s mounting frustrations. Any attempt Kate makes to connect with Miles leads to repeated rejection, further isolating her. Meanwhile, Flora shares that the former governess, Miss Jessel, left without a proper farewell, deeply hurting Flora.

While searching for answers, Kate stumbles upon Jessel’s diary, which reveals alarming details about Quint, the horse trainer, who had been making advances towards Jessel—abuse that eventually manifests itself in Kate’s unsettling nightmares of assault, wherein Miles and Quint become indistinguishably intertwined.

After learning that Quint met his demise due to a drunken fall from his horse, the weight of Miles’s troubling behavior makes Kate contemplate resigning from her position. Yet, her commitment to Flora keeps her tethered to the estate. A cryptic letter from her mother and a set of ominous black paintings entice her curiosity further. That night, compelled by supernatural whispers, Kate ventures outside and discovers Jessel’s grim remains submerged in water, surrounded by a sense of dread.

Returning to the mansion, she’s drawn to a room in the East Wing, an area saturated with ghostly visions and chilling revelations of Jessel’s murder at the hands of Quint. In a confrontational twist of fate, Kate is assaulted by Quint’s spirit, but Mrs. Grose’s timely intervention snaps her out of a nightmarish state. It becomes clear that Mrs. Grose is complicit in the dark acts surrounding Quint and has orchestrated much of the chaos befalling Kate and the children.

As a confrontation erupts, Quint’s vengeful spirit ultimately claims Mrs. Grose’s life in a catastrophic turn of events, leading to a shocking resolution where Kate finds solace in the comforting embrace of Flora and Miles, who apologize for their previous actions. The trio makes a desperate escape in Kate’s car, racing away from the estate and into the uncertain night.

But just as the audience starts to breathe easy—the twist reveals that none of this escape truly occurred! Instead, all the experiences and terror were mere hallucinations brought on by the haunting black paintings created by her mother. Facing the children about their perceived wrongdoings, Kate is met with denial, while an accidental break of one of Flora’s dolls triggers an explosive reaction from Flora, drawing unsettling parallels to Kate’s own fractured state.

In a haunting final moment, Kate is confronted by a terrifying vision of her mother amidst the oppressive ambiance of the asylum, where a demonic figure crawls on the floor, painting with frenzied despair. The culmination leaves Kate screaming in horror as she brushes against the tangled web of her own psyche, succinctly solidifying her descent into chaos.

This eerie exploration of psychological torment and isolation leaves much to the viewer’s interpretation, as they navigate through the uncanny layers of this haunting tale.
