What Happens in Spanish Affair 2: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Spanish Affair 2 (2015) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Amaia, played by Clara Lago, is a Basque woman who travels to Seville for her hen party, despite the devastating news that her fiancé, Antxón, has abandoned her and left her in severe debt. While there, she clashes with a local bartender named Rafa, who performs a comedy routine mocking Basques. After a drunken confrontation leads to her being kicked out of the bar, Amaia ends up spending the night at Rafa's home, accidentally leaving her purse behind.

Driven by a desire to return the purse, Rafa decides to travel to the Basque Country—a place he has never visited—despite warnings from his friends. During the journey, he befriends Merche, a widowed Southerner who relocated to the region years prior. Upon arrival, Amaia is horrified to see him and promptly kicks him out. However, after Rafa is arrested for accidentally starting a fire with a cigarette, he spends time in jail where he falsely claims to be a member of the Basque independence movement to fit in with other inmates.

Meanwhile, Amaia reunites with her estranged father, Koldo, who has been absent for six years. To avoid telling her father that she was jilted, Amaia bails Rafa out of jail on one condition: he must pretend to be Antxón until Koldo leaves the following week.

Rafa reluctantly accepts, fabricating a ridiculous list of eight traditional Basque surnames to maintain the ruse. Merche joins the scheme by posing as Antxón's mother, Anne, and tries to foster a genuine romance between the two. As Rafa navigates the pressure of being viewed as a leader by local rebels and the demands of Amaia, the two begin to develop real feelings for one another.

The deception reaches a climax when they plan for Amaia to jilt "Antxón" at the altar, but she finds she cannot go through with it and says "I do". In the aftermath, Rafa flees back to Seville, while Koldo and Merche unexpectedly find a romantic connection of their own. Ultimately, Amaia confesses the truth to her father, who realizes her happiness is the priority. She eventually travels back to Seville to declare her love for Rafa, and the two happily reunite.

Even when abandonment or family conflict supplies emotional stakes, humor and sincere second chances dominate, leading toward affectionate, happy resolutions.

Why these movies?

The story pattern: An estranged family member sets out on a purposeful journey, often to recover a relationship or mend an old rupture. The route supplies comic detours, regional or social clashes, and chances to meet potential partners. As separate romantic arcs develop, the family conflict softens through shared experience, confession, and reconciliation.

Why they belong together: The shared appeal is the combination of a steady road-trip structure, broad situational comedy, and a sincere family-reconciliation arc. Regional identity and parental tension create friction without danger, while parallel romances keep the journey lively and the eventual reunion emotionally satisfying.
