In drought‑stricken Northeastern Brazil, migrants flock to Recife hoping to catch a ship to Santos and a better life in the South. In Recife’s shantytown, an aging washerwoman struggles to support her family: her traumatized ex‑sailor husband, a sick younger son, a teenage daughter turning to prostitution, and an older son working odd jobs to save for a move with his girlfriend, Aurora.
