The film follows a fisherman’s family living on the outskirts of Shanghai, beginning with the birth of twin siblings—a boy and a girl. Their childhood is portrayed in brief sketches, showing their simple coastal life and the growing friendship they form with a similarly aged boy from a wealthy family, underscoring the contrast between the humble fishing community and the affluent “young master.”
