Set in the 1980s in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, So Close to Paradise follows two young migrant workers as they navigate a harsh, glittering underworld. Dong Zi is a naive, hard-working pole carrier who scrapes by carrying heavy loads from place to place, while his older, more cynical roommate Gao Ping has already slipped into petty crime. When Gao is cheated out of a small sum by a local gangster named Su Wu, he drags Dong Zi deeper into Wuhan’s shadowy side, and their first stop is the Li Li Club, a bar where they search for the striking Vietnamese singer, Ruan Hong. After a tense conversation, the two men abduct the young woman and drag her back to their cramped apartment, where Gao rapes her while Dong Zi watches from behind a crack in the door, speechless and torn.
What begins as a brutal act evolves into an uneasy, complicating bond. To Dong Zi’s surprise and consternation, Gao Ping and Ruan Hong soon become lovers, darkly reshaping their fragile trio. As Gao and Ruan’s relationship deepens, Dong Zi drifts into a mist of jealousy and helplessness, the tension between them simmering beneath the surface. Ruan’s dream reveals itself in quiet conversations—she longs to become a professional singer, a path that feels increasingly out of reach in a city that moves fast and harshly.
Ruan’s vulnerability grows clearer when she hands Gao a phone number for Su Wu and hints at the danger that haunts them. Gao’s reaction is a mix of anger and determination, and soon he confronts Su Wu with a resolve that turns violent: he beats Su Wu and imprisons him in a cellar, only releasing him later after forcing Su Wu to lead him to his boss. What follows is not fully shown, but Dong Zi narrates that Gao becomes entangled in a dangerous scheme with Su Wu and the boss, and that Gao eventually murders an unknown person in service of that web of power.
Tensions escalate as it becomes evident that Ruan is the kept woman of Su Wu’s boss. Realizing the risk, Gao vanishes just as the boss and the police close in on him. In a shadowy turn of events, Ruan is briefly arrested when the Li Li Club is seized as a prostitution den, and Gao remains hidden as the net tightens. When Gao finally returns to the apartment, he is cornered by the Boss and killed by his henchmen, a brutal end that casts a long shadow over the already fragile trio.
The film closes on a quieter note. Ruan, now released from prison, returns to the apartment that once housed Dong Zi and Gao. For Dong Zi, she is the only familiar presence left in a city that has claimed so much of their lives. They share memories of what they endured, and Ruan thanks Dong Zi for “kidnapping” her that night. Before she leaves, Dong Zi gifts her a Walkman with a tape of one of her songs, a small, poignant keepsake that marks both an end and a fragile, hopeful beginning.
