A farmer and his wife raise three children on a remote Inner Mongolian farm, but strict Chinese population‑control policies forbid any more. The husband journeys to the nearest town for birth‑control supplies and rescues a Russian truck driver stranded in a lake. He brings the stranger back, where the initially uneasy Russian soon becomes enchanted by the peaceful countryside and decides to stay, a choice that signals significant changes for the family and their community.
