The summer of ‘91 was anything but mundane for 14-year-old friends A.J. Carter and Moose Miller. With their knack for entrepreneurial schemes, the duo previously experimented with betting on dog races and crafting homemade beer for school parties. However, after their beer venture fell flat when their parents intervened, they sought more traditional job opportunities for the season.

Their chance for a lucrative endeavor came in the form of Shane Workman, an older friend and Army veteran, recently back from the Gulf War, who worked as a lifeguard at the community pool. He revealed to them that the snack shack located there was available for rent, igniting their enthusiasm for what could be a profitable enterprise. Using A.J.’s college savings as their investment, the pair confidently overbid for the shack at a city council auction, worrying A.J.’s parents, Judge and Jean.

Undaunted by their parents’ concerns, A.J. and Moose threw themselves into managing the snack shack, which experienced a meteoric rise in success, generating a staggering $1,600 on its opening day alone. Just as everything seemed to fall into place, a new neighbor moved in next to A.J. - Brooke, the daughter of a military man stationed in town temporarily. With her adventurous spirit and love for spontaneous photography, Brooke quickly became the object of A.J.’s affection, although his allergies caused him to keep a distance initially.

As the summer progressed, A.J.’s feelings for Brooke deepened, complicating matters when Moose also developed a crush on her. The competition for her heart sparked tension not only between the friends but also with a pair of local bullies, Randy and Rodney Carmichael, who were both known for their belligerent behavior. As conflicts brewed among A.J., Moose, and their rivals, it seemed inevitable that their summer adventure would escalate into something more significant.

Throughout this complex maze of teenage emotions, A.J. often sought guidance from Shane, who was not only a mentor but also a friend. The two engaged in plans for an exhilarating hiking trip in Alaska the following summer, which promised to challenge their endurance. Meanwhile, A.J. worked diligently to mend his relationship with his parents, ultimately surprising them with concert tickets as a form of repayment, fostering a renewed sense of acceptance at home. As this new harmony unfolded, A.J. found himself increasingly drawn to Brooke, who reciprocated his interest, leading to a burgeoning romance.

Their relationship blossomed during a party held in an abandoned movie theater, where peers gathered for a night of revelry. However, trouble brewed when Moose, noticing A.J.’s affection for Brooke, became envious and understood he needed to intervene with malicious intent. Driven by jealousy, he fabricated a hurtful lie that threatened to sever the delicate bond forming between the two friends. But as tensions escalated, Brooke’s calming presence served to diffuse the situation, and the trio found themselves seeking refuge behind the movie screen as police arrived to scatter the party.

The following day back at the Snack Shack, Moose’s treachery surfaced, leaving A.J. feeling betrayed. Yet, wise words from Shane helped to heal his injured pride, assuring him that Brooke’s feelings were real and she was merely waiting for him to act. At a subsequent gathering, A.J. finally gathered the courage that resulted in a passionate kiss with Brooke, only for Moose to witness it and retreat into the night, amplifying the rift between them.

As the days wore on, A.J. and Moose found themselves avoiding each other, allowing the Snack Shack to languish. However, when Moose faced consequences for cleaning up after an act of vandalism, they made a tentative agreement to work separate shifts, opening a path towards reconciliation.

Tragedy struck with devastating news delivered by A.J.’s father, the Judge: Shane had died in a car accident, leaving both A.J. and Moose grappling with profound sorrow. Adding to their heartache was Brooke’s looming departure to Germany, amplifying feelings of loss. In a heartfelt farewell, Brooke gifted A.J. a personalized handkerchief to manage his allergies and a photo of Shane and himself, marking the bittersweet memories they shared.

As Brooke left, A.J. had a poignant moment with the Judge on their porch, sharing beers as they reminisced on life’s fragility and the value of cherishing loved ones.
