Traveling through dense woods, Jay stumbles upon a Native American camp. The peaceful scene quickly turns chaotic as Union officers arrive, sparking a confrontation that intertwines Jay's fate with that of the bandit, Silas Selleck.

In a tense moment, Silas confronts a Union officer, and before Jay can react, Silas shoots the officer. This violent event forges an unexpected bond between Jay and Silas, leading them to team up against the threats they face.

Through poignant flashbacks, the tender moments between Jay and Rose are revealed, showcasing their innocent joy as they roll down a hill by the sea. These memories illustrate Jay's deep love for Rose, though she sees him only as a brother.
