Freddie, the Ski Club president, organizes a midterm vacation to ski country in Idaho, dragging along Todd, Craig, Linda, and Barbara. The group hopes to learn Freddie's technique and watch how his romantic conquests play out. The trip kicks off a series of disguises, pranks, and unexpected romance.

The group arrives at a rustic ski resort and settles in for a long, comic weekend. As they observe Linda and Barbara, they are repeatedly interrupted by a surreal ice-skating, yodeling polar bear and by the antics of the lederhosen-clad lodge manager Mr. Pevney. These interruptions set the tone for the resort's eccentric atmosphere.

To blend in, Todd and Craig pose as frumpy, non-threatening English women named Jane and Nora. They plant themselves among the group to study the women's behavior and the mistakes Freddie's attracting patterns reveal. The disguises kick off the film's running jokes and set up the romantic misdirection.

Dressed as himself, Todd catches the eye of Nita, a gorgeous Swedish ski instructor, hoping to provoke Linda's jealousy. Freddie, meanwhile, begins to fixate on Craig when Craig is in Nora's disguise, complicating the group dynamics.

Nita convinces Todd to compete in a ski jump against Freddie. The rivalry escalates as the jump ends catastrophically, with Todd injuring his leg. This accident forces the group to re-evaluate their plan.

Todd crawls through miles of deep snow at night with a broken leg to reach Nita's house for help. There, he learns that Nita's exotic persona masks a desire to be treated like an American girl who wants conversation and companionship rather than flashy flirtation.

Back at the lodge, Freddie, obsessed with Nora, tries to break down the door to her room. Trapped inside, Todd and Craig consider their options before escaping through a window. The duo then hails a taxi to start moving away from the resort.

They escape to Santa Monica, with Freddie in pursuit aboard a moped driven by the eccentric lodge manager Mr. Pevney. The chaotic chase adds a fast-paced comic beat to the escape.

The rest of the group, having dropped their spring break plans, follows the fleeing trio to Santa Monica aboard the same bus, turning the trip into a long, comic road saga. The blend of disguise and chase injects energy into the finale.

The group arrives at Todd's parents' beachfront house in Santa Monica, bringing the deceptions into daylight as the couples share their true feelings. The location and setting create a dramatic reversal from the ski trip to a sunny family scene.

With the truths on the table, the couples confront how their pretenses shaped their relationships, and the truth behind the disguises is revealed. The heart of the story shifts toward reconciliation, laughter, and new beginnings.

Freddie runs into the Pacific Ocean calling out to Nora, convinced she has swum away after hearing he is coming. Craig teases him with a line about catching her somewhere near Guam, underscoring the film's humor and bittersweet tone.

Craig tells Freddie that they will tell him everything tomorrow, signaling that the truth will soon be revealed and the group can move forward. The ending leaves room for resolution and a smile.
