As the forests of Earth perish due to environmental destruction, humanity faces a grim prospect. The last remaining pieces of arboreal life are preserved aboard eight massive cargo ships containing geodesic domes.

Freeman Lowell, the dedicated botanist aboard the Valley Forge, plays a crucial role in nurturing the remaining flora within the domes. He immerses himself in his work, focusing on preserving these invaluable specimens for a potential future.

Lowell's peaceful existence is interrupted when he receives orders from command to destroy the dome habitats. He watches in horror as four of the six domes aboard the Valley Forge are obliterated by nuclear charges.
