Sharmaji Namkeen

Brij Gopal Sharma Rishi Kapoor, known to family and friends as Sharmaji, is a warm-hearted middle-class widower who lives in Subhash Nagar, West Delhi, sharing a modest home with his two sons, Sandeep “Rinku” Sharma Suhail Nayyar and Vinayak “Vincy” Sharma Taaruk Raina. At 58, he is unexpectedly told to retire from Madhuban Home Appliances, a demand that unsettles him and threatens the life he has carved out around his work and routines. He remains deeply involved with his family, including Urmi Kaul Isha Talwar, who is Rinku’s partner and their plan for a future together, and Veena Manchanda Juhi Chawla Mehta, a boutique owner who soon becomes a close friend. Sharmaji’s steady presence at home and his quiet sense of duty anchor the family as they navigate changing circumstances.

Seeking purpose beyond retirement, Sharmaji explores new hobbies and even tries a string of small jobs to stay engaged. After sampling Zumba classes and dabbling in property brokerage, he reluctantly agrees, at the urging of his childhood friend K.K. Chaddha Satish Kaushik, to cook for kitty parties. His warm, generous cooking quickly earns him admiration, and he becomes a welcome fixture at these gatherings. At one party, he strikes a friendship with Manju Gulati Sheeba Chaddha, who genuinely thanks him for a job well done. Through Veena’s warmth and hospitality, Sharmaji’s circle broadens, and he also cooks for Robbie Sachdeva Parmeet Sethi, a politician who hosts religious meetings and community events at which Sharmaji’s dishes are always a highlight.

On Sharmaji’s birthday, the extended family tunes in to a video of Sharmaji dancing at a kitty party, a moment that becomes a source of embarrassment for Rinku and Vincy. The footage triggers a tense confrontation in which Vincy reveals that Rinku is on the verge of moving out, while Rinku accuses Vincy of failing his exams. The argument unsettles Sharmaji, but it also strengthens his resolve to pursue what he loves—cooking and bringing joy to others—despite the cost to family harmony. Throughout these moments, Sharmaji and Veena grow closer, their friendship deepening as he continues to entertain and delight at more events.

Tensions heighten when Sharmaji and Vincy overhear Rinku arguing with a property developer about a Gurgaon flat. Rinku confesses that he has already paid a token sum of ₹15 lakh, but the project is revealed to be on illegal land. The revelation rocks the family: Rinku admits he kept this from his father, and Sharmaji’s focus shifts from cooking to protecting his family’s future. With the deal put on hold and the situation growing more complex, the family braces for what comes next, while Sharmaji grapples with the weight of his son’s actions.

The conflict reaches a crisis point when Rinku, under the influence of alcohol, goes to the developer’s office and is blocked by security. Sharmaji learns of the arrest while at a kitty party and hurries to the police station with the women from the group. The police, it turns out, are in cahoots with Jain, the developer, and both Sharmaji and Rinku find themselves behind bars, while the ladies wait outside. Inside the cell, Sharmaji remains calm and resourceful, using a hidden phone to reach Veena. Veena signals to Robbie Sachdeva Parmeet Sethi, [the Mayor of West Delhi] who can help intervene. Robbie’s influence becomes the turning point: he works to secure the pair’s release.

Once free, Rinku confronts his mistakes and apologizes to his father for not being a better son. Sharmaji forgives him, choosing reconciliation over resentment, and the family moves forward together. The experience leaves Sharmaji with a renewed sense of purpose: he will continue to bring people together—through food, kindness, and a steadfast commitment to his family—while staying true to himself and the life he’s built in Subhash Nagar.
