In the Siberian wilderness, violinist Dimitri flees a labor camp with tribesman Toli. When a herd of Yakut horses grazes nearby, they seize two steeds and escape, but Toli is mortally wounded. Before dying, he reveals himself as a shaman, giving Dimitri an amulet that becomes his guardian spirit as he rides through the wilds, evading pursuers.
