Suk-gyu is not Hye-sun's father as he claims, he is her former pimp. He is chasing her to recover stolen money he had hidden for himself. When Hye-sun left the brothel, she took his money, and he has been pursuing her to get it back.

Early in the film, Suk-gyu's aggressive interrogation of Ki-woong about Hye-sun's whereabouts hints at something more than parental concern.

Hye-sun gets infected when she scratches her foot while escaping through the barricade at Hoehyeon Station. The scratch from debris or a contaminated surface carries the zombie infection, which later causes her to reanimate after she dies.

The film emphasizes repeatedly that the infection spreads through bites and scratches, making her foot injury a ticking time bomb.

Ki-woong tries to stop Suk-gyu by attacking him with a knife, but Suk-gyu overpowers him and kills him with a brutal strike. This happens inside the model apartment where Hye-sun has taken refuge.

Ki-woong is desperate for money and sees pimping Hye-sun back to her old life as the quickest solution to their financial problems. His argument with Hye-sun stems from this conflict, she fled that life, but he is willing to force her back for money.
