Fermin escapes his hidden subway lair into a nation moving from dictatorship to democracy, the bright new light leaving him disoriented. At a police station he cannot recall his own name, and the archives label him a 13‑year veteran of illegal political opposition. To earn freedom he must remain silent about the former regime’s crimes, while the woman he pledged to marry thinks he is dead.
